I remember back in 1994 I was up in the Bay of Islands north of Aukland in New Zealand. Jon (my backpacking mate) and I did a day kyaking around the Motumarie Islands. Our guide showed us where the best fresh mussels were and we collected bags full to take back to the hostel we were staying in. One of teh travellers in the hostel we’d met the day before was a chef by trade – he organised a whip round for some garlic, white wine and cream. The results – some untypically well (and luxuriously) fed hostellers that night.

Sounds gorgeous, Steve. Next time you’re at the cottage I’ll have to see if I can get my hands on some more mussels and you can demonstrate that chef’s recipe!
