Black pudding festivities in Kanturk
Remember I mentioned in April that McCarthy’s Butchers in Kanturk took gold at at the annual awards held by La Confrérie des Chevaliers du Goûte Boudin in Normandy? Well, that medal is coming home to Kanturk tomorrow when La Confrérie, the Brotherhood of the Knights of the Black Pudding, arrive for a full regalia Pudding Parade at 5.30pm down Strand Street to the Main Street.
After the medal presentation to father and son Jack and Tim McCarthy for their rich and delicious whiskey and cream black pudding, there will be a hog roast alongside 20-30 food stalls offering the best of Irish artisan produce and, Jack promises, an evening’s entertainment to remember.
The Brotherhood are in Newport, Co Mayo tonight, awarding a bronze medal to Sean Kelly‘s Putog, and they follow Kanturk with a trip to Rosscarbery to present Willie and Avril Allshire of Caherbeg Free Range Pork with their silver medal. It’s nothing less than a country-wide perambulation to celebrate the best of Irish butchers and black puddings.
Their trip ends up at the launch of Cork’s French Food Festival in On the Pig’s Back, Douglas on Wednesday 22 September before, I presume, their livers take a well-earned rest. Not necessary at this end, however, as the French Food Festival continues until Saturday 25 September.
