Make Bake Love by Lilly Higgins
For me, it’s all about the tart. The Raspberry Macaroon Tart to be precise. When I interviewed Lilly Higgins for a package about underground dining in Ireland for Lyric fm I visited her cosy house near Cobh. Lilly’s first move, as we walked into her kitchen, was to offer me tea. One glance at the freshly baked tart on the table was enough to convince me that a cuppa was definitely the best way to kick off proceedings.
A mouthful of the moist, zesty Raspberry Macaroon Tart later I was very happy to hear that it was going to feature in her forthcoming cookbook and it was the first recipe I looked up in Make Bake Love.
But I got a little sidetracked.
There were White Chocolate and Raspberry Bars to distract me, Sticky Toffee Cakes to tempt and a recipe for the crumbly Peanut Butter and Sesame Cookies that made great take-home favours at the Bord Bia/IFBA Irish Food Photography workshop.
Make Bake Love is the perfect cookbook for the onset of winter. From Coffee Cake and Queen of Puddings to Chocolate Fudge Cake – the birthday cake of choice for anyone who was a child during the 80s – and Tiffin, it is warm with nostalgia, even down to the retro design. Pictures of cakes and cookies on vintage kitchenware and fabrics are framed with delicate lace motifs.
Packed with lots of simple, irresistible recipes to keep you cosy in the kitchen, Make Bake Love will be featuring in many Christmas stockings for 2011.
And the tart? Made for, and devoured with, a stream of visitors on Friday. Worth waiting for.
Must Try: Festive Scone Wreath for the season that’s in it; Turtle Bars because I’m a sucker for anything involving caramel and chocolate; and Fig Cake for its keeping qualities.

Can’t wait to get this and start a baking frenzy! Getting an iPad this wk so furiously investigating buying virtual cookbooks .. not the same but needs must!
Love the #tartgate hash tag! I’d be interested to hear your thoughts on the virtual cookbooks. I can see why they would be handy, especially when you’re heading over to NZ, but I still love the real thing.
