The Sustainable Living Stage at Bord Bia Bloom 2024
I really enjoyed my time working as an MC on the Sustainable Living Stage at the Bord Bia Bloom garden festival over the June Bank Holiday weekend.
Some of the groups and people that I got to work with during my two days on stage included FoodCloud‘s Angela Ruttledge, Eoin Lettice from the Irish Tree Explorers Network, Michael Kelly of GIY, Laura Byrne from Certa Ireland, Sarah Kelly at the National Biodiversity Data Centre, Mary Reynolds and Lauren O’Brien from Seal Rescue Ireland
Great line up put together by Louise McLoughlin.
Thanks to Feebee Foran for the photo of me in active listening mode!
Some takeaways from the Sustainable Living Stage:
🥖 use the freezer to cut down on food waste – at the moment 29% of the food we buy is wasted. @foodcloud
🌳 it’s always a good time to plant a tree. @iten_ucc
🌱 growing even just a small proportion of your food encourages you to make better decisions about the rest of the food that you eat. @giyireland
🚗 HVO – hydrotreated vegetable oil – can be used as a diesel replacement in regular cars and produces up to 90% less CO2 emissions. @certaireland
🐝 dandelions are a brilliant source of food for pollinators – not just bees – so don’t get rid of them from your garden. @biodatacentre
🦭 rescued seal pups go to fish school to learn about hunting! @sealrescueireland
🐸 if you want to save the planet, start with your own patch of it. Mary Reynolds of @letsbuildanark was challenging and inspiring.
All that, plus great food from the FoodCloud Kitchen, brilliant flat whites at the Coffee Angel and Naked Berry stalls and so many good things to buy in the Food Village. I departed on the train from Heuston on Friday evening, laden with food, inspired by ideas – and with a vague feeling of unease that I hadn’t quite managed to explore the show gardens, again.
